12 Step Fellowships and Other Support Systems
12 STEP FELLOWSHIP AND HOW IT CAN HELP YOU
If you understand the fundamental foundation of Step One “We admitted we were powerless over our addiction and that our lives had become unmanageable”, you will understand the need for a dedicated support system. The powerlessness they are referring to in Step One is your lack of willpower in and around substances, or your behavior, typical of a using addict that has little to no power over the decision to use. With that being said, the fundamental principal in Step One is the lack of power, so this leads us to a question.
WHAT’S THE SOLUTION; IF THE ADDICT CANNOT CONTROL HIS USAGE, HOW DOES HE/SHE STOP?
Part of the answer lies in Step Two; we need a power greater than ourselves. What step 2 doesn’t specify is the nature of that power exactly. This is the part where 12 step fellowships and other support systems come into play. There are many people out there who are sceptics about God or anything related to Him. What the 12 step fellowships does suggest is that until you can believe, use the word God as an acronym:
G (good) O (orderly) D (direction), a movement, a way forward. Rely on the group and your sponsor for guidance.
THE SUPPORT OF FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS
Most addicts felt or feel alone, disconnected and misunderstood, but having a place to go where you know there are others just like you who feel the same way is comforting. I’ve often heard people say in meetings, “it’s strange but the minute I walked into the room I knew that I belonged, I felt like I had just arrived home”. That feeling can be the difference between someone staying in the program and someone leaving and never returning.
The fact is this, alone and left to his or her own devices an addict will use until he or she dies. With the support of support systems in place, it gives the user the best opportunity to get clean and live a normal healthy life. Reach out for the support of mentors, other users in recovery, and rehabs that take your recovery to heart.
